Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah: The Brave Woman Who Miraculously Changed Islamic Law

By Admin on 3/15/2026

Introduction

The First Woman to Migrate After Al-Hudaybiyyah

Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (RA) was one of the remarkable women in Islamic history. In addition, she demonstrated unwavering faith, courage, and sacrifice. Therefore, her story is a testament to her bravery. Practically, she defied her family’s opposition and migrated for the sake of Allah.

Who Was Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah?

Historically, Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (RA) was from the Quraysh tribe. Also, she was  the daughter of Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ait. Uqbah was one of the staunchest enemies of Islam. Nevertheless, she embraced Islam early. Secretly she held onto her faith due to fear of persecution from her family. Amazingly, her courage and firm belief made her stand out as a role model among the early Muslim women.

Her Migration to Madinah

After the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah between the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Quraysh in the 6th year of Hijrah, a clause stated:

“Any man who migrates to Madinah from Quraysh must be returned to them.”

However, this agreement did not specify anything about women. Despite the risks, Umm Kulthum (RA) courageously decided to migrate from Mecca to Madinah alone. Therefore, she undertook the perilous journey in secret. So, she left  behind her family. Moreover, she endured the dangers of the road. This was only to seek safety with the Prophet (PBUH).

Her Arrival in Madinah

When Umm Kulthum (RA) arrived in Madinah, she sought refuge with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Also, she explained her situation. Nevertheless her family, adhered to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. They demanded that she returned to Mecca. However, Allah revealed a verse addressing the matter of believing women who migrated. This verse exempted them from the treaty’s terms:

         “يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا جَاءَكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ مُهَاجِرَاتٍ فَامْتَحِنُوهُنَّ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِإِيمَانِهِنَّ فَإِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤْمِنَاتٍ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى الْكُفَّارِ”
                            (Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 10)

The Examination of Believing Women

Allah commanded the Prophet (PBUH) to examine the faith of the migrating women. This was to ensure that their migration was solely for Allah and His Messenger. The examination consisted of a simple question:

“Have you migrated for Allah and His Messenger?”

If the answer was yes, their faith was firm. Therefore,  Allah allowed them to stay in Madinah. Thus, Allah allowed Umm Kulthum (RA) to remain in Madinah, and the prophet rejected Quraysh’s demandss.
