Ayat al-Kursi and the Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: The Most Protective Quranic Recitations (UK Guide 2026)
By Eaalim Institute on 4/27/2026
Three of the most powerful Quranic recitations are concentrated in Surah Al-Baqarah: Ayat al-Kursi (verse 255) and the last two ayahs (verses 285-286). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically commanded their recitation for daily protection, and authentic hadith promise enormous spiritual benefits to those who recite them consistently. For British Muslim families, these are among the most important verses to memorise after Surah Al-Fatihah. This UK guide presents both passages with Arabic, transliteration, English meaning, the authentic hadith on their merits, and how to integrate them into daily UK family practice.
Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)
Translation: "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."
The merits of Ayat al-Kursi
- Greatest verse in the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA): "Which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?" When Ubayy replied "Ayat al-Kursi", the Prophet ﷺ struck his chest and said: "May knowledge be easy for you, Abu al-Mundhir!" (Sahih Muslim 810)
- Recited after every fardh prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after each fardh prayer, nothing keeps him from entering Paradise except death" (Sunan al-Nasa'i 9928, sahih).
- Recited before sleep. "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, Allah appoints over him an angel who will protect him until morning, and Shaytan will not approach him until morning" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
- Powerful Ruqyah. Used to ward off jinn, evil eye, and any spiritual harm.
The last two ayahs of Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)
These two verses are the foundational creed of Muslim conviction (ayah 285) and the foundational supplication of Muslim humility (ayah 286).
Ayah 285
Translation: "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers. They say: 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers,' and they say: 'We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination.'"
Ayah 286
Translation: "Allah does not charge a soul with more than it can bear. It will have what it has earned and against it what it has earned. 'Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not lay upon us that which we have no ability to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.'"
The merits of the last two ayahs
- "Whoever recites these two ayahs at night, they will be sufficient for him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5040, Sahih Muslim 807)
- Treasures from the heavens. The Prophet ﷺ said these were given to him from a treasure beneath the Throne, not given to any prophet before him.
Daily integration for British Muslim families
- After every fardh prayer: Ayat al-Kursi (Sunnah).
- Before sleep: Ayat al-Kursi + the last two ayahs of Al-Baqarah + the three Mu'awwidhat surahs (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) three times each, blowing into the hands and wiping over the body. This is the complete Bukhari sleep routine (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
- For protection during travel, illness, anxiety: Recite Ayat al-Kursi.

Ayat al-Kursi ('the Throne Verse') is Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called it the greatest verse in the Quran (Sahih Muslim 810). It describes Allah's eternal sovereignty over creation: His knowledge encompasses all things, His Throne extends over the heavens and earth, He never sleeps, and nothing escapes His knowledge. Recited daily by hundreds of millions of Muslims globally.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, Allah appoints over him an angel who will protect him until morning, and Shaytan will not approach him until morning' (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311). UK Muslim families teaching children Ayat al-Kursi by age 7-8 establish a lifelong nightly protection routine.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285-286 — the foundational creed of Muslim conviction (we believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers; we hear and we obey) and the foundational supplication of Muslim humility ('Allah does not charge a soul with more than it can bear...'). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said these two ayahs were given to him from a treasure beneath the Throne, not given to any prophet before.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever recites these two ayahs at night, they will be sufficient for him' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5040, Sahih Muslim 807). 'Sufficient' has been interpreted by classical scholars as protection from harm, sufficiency in worship of the night, and assurance against any spiritual or material need that arises overnight. Pair them with Ayat al-Kursi and the Mu'awwidhatayn for the complete Bukhari sleep routine.
Five steps from Sahih al-Bukhari 5017 and supporting hadith: (1) Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) — once. (2) The last two ayahs of Al-Baqarah (2:285-286) — once. (3) Surah Al-Ikhlas (chapter 112) — three times. (4) Surah Al-Falaq (chapter 113) — three times. (5) Surah An-Nas (chapter 114) — three times. After each surah recitation, blow gently into the hands and wipe over the body, starting with the head. Total time: 60-90 seconds. Builds lifelong protective habit.
With one-to-one teacher and 10-15 minutes daily practice, most British Muslim children memorise Ayat al-Kursi in 7-14 days. It's the longest single ayah of the Quran (~50 words) but has a clear rhythmic structure that aids memorisation. Pair with the four-step method (listen, match, quiz, record). The last two ayahs of Al-Baqarah typically take another 14-21 days. By age 8-9, every UK Muslim child should have all three memorised.
Yes — established Sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after each fardh prayer, nothing keeps him from entering Paradise except death' (Sunan al-Nasa'i 9928, sahih). Recite after the post-prayer dhikr (Subhanallah 33, Alhamdulillah 33, Allahu Akbar 34). Takes about 30 seconds per prayer, so 2.5 minutes per day across the five prayers. UK Muslim families building this habit accumulate enormous reward over years.
For understanding, yes — read the English meaning so the child knows what they're reciting. For the recitation reward, the Arabic is required. The Quran was sent down in Arabic and its inimitable nature is in Arabic. Pair English understanding with Arabic memorisation. Most British Muslim children manage Arabic memorisation of Ayat al-Kursi by age 7-8 with proper Tajweed teaching.
The 'Kursi' literally means 'footstool' or 'chair'. Classical Sunni tafsir (Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari) treats this as a real attribute of Allah without speculating on its physical nature — affirming what Allah described without comparing to creation. Some scholars distinguish between Al-Kursi (smaller) and Al-Arsh (the Throne, larger). The verse emphasises that Allah's sovereignty 'extends over the heavens and the earth' — so vast that 'their preservation tires Him not'.
Eaalim teachers walk children through Ayat al-Kursi with proper Tajweed and brief tafsir context. Particular attention to: the long alif of 'Allahu', the shaddah on multiple letters throughout, the qalqalah at the end of phrases. Pair audio listening (Sheikh Mishary Alafasy, Sheikh Maher al-Muaiqly) with weekly one-to-one lessons for proper pronunciation correction. Free 30-minute trial: https://eaalim.com/free-trial
