Introduction
Who is Khawla bint Tha'labah?
Historically, Khawla bint Tha’labah (RA) was a companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In addition, she was one of the early Muslim women who embraced Islam. In fact, she married Aws ibn al-Samit (RA). Truly, Aws was the brother of Ubadah ibn al-Samit. As Muslims, we know Khawla for her wisdom, piety, and steadfastness in faith.
Basically, Khawla bint Tha’labah (RA) was one of the remarkable female prophet’s companions in Islam. This was because her story is a testament to the honor and justice that Islam grants women. Consequently, Khawla’s perseverance and faith led to a direct revelation from Allah, forever preserving her legacy in the Holy Quran.
The Story of Khawla and Al-Zihar
However, Khawla’s most significant moment came when her husband, Aws ibn al-Samit, uttered words that were common in pre-Islamic times:
“You are to me like the back of my mother.”
In fact, Muslims knew this statement as Zihar. Practically, Zihar is a form of declaration. Religiously, this is a form of divorse, that made the wife unlawful for the husband. Really, it resembles a divorce. Nevertheless, it is adivorce without the possibility of reconciliation. Consequently, this act deeply hurt and concerned her about her family. Therefore, Khawla went to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to plead her case. She said:
“O Messenger of Allah, he consumed my youth and I bore him children. Now that I have grown older, he pronounced Zihar upon me!”
So, Khawla continued to argue her case, expressing her suffering and seeking justice. Really, her persistence and faith led to a divine revelation. Therefore, Allah revealed verses in response to her complaint:
“قَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَوْلَ الَّتِي تُجَادِلُكَ فِي زَوْجِهَا وَتَشْتَكِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ يَسْمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ”
(Surah Al-Mujadilah: 1)
In fact, these verses not only resolved Khawla’s issue but also laid down the rules for the practice of Zihar. This way, it ensured justice and fairness.
Her Lessons and Virtues
Determination and Courage: Really, Khawla’s persistence in seeking justice teaches us to stand firm for our rights with dignity and faith. In addition, the Value of Women in Islam: Her story highlights that Allah hears the cries of the oppressed, regardless of gender. Moreover, Islam honors and respects women. Reliance on Allah: Therefore, despite her difficulties, Khawla turned to Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) for support, showcasing her unwavering trust in Allah.
Respect from the Companions
Later on, Muslims revered Khawla’s status so much that even Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA), the second Caliph, held her in high regard. So, scholars narrated that during his caliphate, Khawla once stopped him to speak, and Umar listened attentively. Once, when someone asked why he gave her so much time, Umar responded:
“Woe to you! This is a woman whose complaint Allah heard from above the seven heavens. Shouldn’t Umar listen to her?”
Clearly, this moment emphasizes the high respect and honor Muslims gave to Khawla and her story.
