Introduction:
This blog is going to talk about some of the important permanent qualities of the Arabic letters (sounds) which are without opposites. this blog is going to talk about Qalqalah, al-safeer, al-takreer, al-tafashi and al-istitalah. This is very important to know about some of the qualities and characteristics of the Arabic sounds and letters.
Qalqalah:
Qalqalah literally means to echo. It technically, means a permanent quality that creates an echoing sound or a slight vibration in the makhraj. In other words and phonetically, it is to follow the given letter or sound with a short schwa sound. This quality is found in the following five letters (sounds):(قطب جد) ق – ط – ب – ج – د
There are three levels of Qalqalah as regards to the strength of its pronunciation:
- Strongest: when making waqf (stopping) on a Mushaddad letter of Qalqalah.
- ٍStrong: when making waqf on a Sakin letter of Qalqalah.
- Weak: when the Sakin letter of Qalqalah is in the middle of a word.
As-Safeer:
As–Safeer literally means whistling. As-Safeer technically means the natural occurrence of a whistle sound emitted while pronouncing the letter (sound).
- The following letters (sounds) contain this quality: (س – ص – ز )
At-Takreer:
At–Takreer means repetition. At-Takreer technically means the trilling of the tongue while pronouncing a letter (sound) that causes the letter (sound) to be pronounced more than once. this phenomenon is found only in one letter (sound) ( ر )
Note: Unlike the other qualities, we must abstain from this quality while pronouncing this letter.
At-Tafashy:
At–Tafashy literally means to spread around. At-Tafashy technically means the spreading of the letter (sound) in the mouth while pronouncing it. this quality is found only in the letter (sound) (ش)
Al-Istitaalah:
Al–Istitalah literally means prolongation. Al-Istihalah technically means the prolongation of the sound throughout its Makhraj; from its beginning till the end (1.5 to 1.75 beat). This is found only in the status of Sukoon or shaddah for the letter of (ض)
