Why surah al-asr is so short:

Allah goes on to talk about al-asr. It also has another meaning. It can mean the afternoon prayer. This shows us the importance of the five obligatory daily prayers for a muslim. Allah says ((by al-Asr, man is at a loss)) this means that man’s lifetime decreases every second he lives. Then the surah moves on to a logical issue. Now that life passes quickly; and all living creatures are in a uniform march toward their inevitable death, you can be a winner. You can do good deeds. This way you make the best of your lifetime. This is the divine scheme to invest in your short lifetime. The surah urges a Muslim to be a good obedient Muslim.

The value of patience:

The surah goes on to talk about some very useful values which a Muslim should stick to. After stressing the importance of the value of faith and the true belief , the sura stressed the importance of doing good deeds. Then, the surah moves to stress the importance of advising each other to stick to the right. The Right is Allah. The right is the opposite of wrong. The right is justice. Justice is the opposite of oppression and injustice. Moreover, the surah stresses the importance of patience. Patience is to positively endure hardships. Patience is a good quality and virtue to which all Muslims should stick.

Educating the first muslims:

Surah al-asr was revealed in Makkah. The early Muslims faced all kinds of oppression, hardships and prosecution. Prophet Mohammad was among them suffering in the same way they suffered. However, the early Muslims were humans after all. They were humans of flesh and blood. They had their own limits of endurance. Therefore, it was vital for the early Muslims to practice the virtue of patience. Sometimes, patience is the only answer. Patience is the only solution when the time is hard and you can do nothing. In a way or another things will take a better course of action. That is why all you should do is to wait and see and be patient.
