Truly, Arwa bint Harb, also Umm Jamil wasthe wife of Abu Lahab. She was is one of the prominent figures in the Holy Quran. This was due to her intense hostility towards Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Also, she was hostile to the early message of Islam.
Who Was Abu Lahab's Wife?
Historically, her name was Arwa bint Harbibn Umayyah. In addition, the Arabs knew her commonly as Umm Jamil. In fact, she was the sister of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. Abu Sufyan was one of the leaders of Quraysh. Moreover, we know Umm Jamil for her status in society. However, she used her influence to oppose Islam and harm the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Her Hostility Toward Islam
From the very beginning of the Prophet’s mission, Umm Jamil as well as her husband, became fierce opponents of Islam: So, she would spread harmful rumors. This was to instigate people against the Prophet (PBUH). We also know that she used to carry thorny branches. Moreover, she would place them in the Prophet’s path. This was in order to cause him physical harm. Consequently, she relentlessly mocked and abused the early Muslims. Furthermore, she would encouraged Quraysh to oppose the new faith.
Her Mention in the Quran
Really, Umm Jamil’s actions were so significant that Allah mentioned her in Surah Al-Masad. The surah scondemned both her and her husband:
