Introduction:
During their Islamic studies courses and the Holy Quran Tajweed courses, kids learn that The Holy Quran says: “The number of the month for Allah is twelve. This was decided on the day when Allah created the world. Among them, there are four forbidden months. Therefore, don’t be unjust to yourselves.” For this reason, there are twelve months on the lunar and hijri calendar. As a reminder for Hifz ul Quran and Islamic studies courses kids learn that the lunar and hijri year starts with the month of al-Muharram.
The importance of the forbidden months:
During their Islamic studies’ courses and the Holy Quran Tajweed courses, kids learn that the Arabs used to fight a lot. tribes used to raid tribes before islam. However, they needed time to make truces and rest from this continuous fighting and clashes. They also needed time to visit Makkah and do pilgrimage to al-Kaaba. Therefore, they introduced the idea of the forbidden months, during which they stopped fighting. The four forbidden months are: Al-Muharrm, Rajab, dhul-Qaeda and dhul-Hijjah.As a reminder for Hifz ul Quran and Islamic studies courses kids learn that it is very important to notice that the three consecutive months of dhul-Qa’dah, dhul-Hijjah and al-Muharram are the pilgrimage months. This means that pilgrimage takes place during these three months. The pilgrimage journey used to take days, weeks and months.

Therefore, the Arabs needed peace and security to perform their sacred rituals in peace. so, they had to stop fighting. Having visited Makkah and performed pilgrimage, the Arabs needed to return home in peace. During their Islamic studies’ courses and the Holy Quran Tajweed courses, kids learn that the return journey took place in the month of al-Muharram. Therefore, the Arabs needed badly to stop fighting till they had returned home safely. There was a practical necessity for the Arabs to prevent fighting during the month of al-Muharram. As a reminder for Hifz ul Quran and Islamic studies courses kids learn that the Arabs had a special respect for their traditions and customs. Hence, they respected a lot the month of al-Muharram. They even called it the month of Allah, denoting their great respect to this sacred holy month.
Al-Muharram starts the lunar hijri year:

The hijri lunar year starts with the month of al-Muharram. al-Muharram is really a special month. During their Islamic studies’ courses and the Holy Quran Tajweed courses, kids learn that it is preferred to go fasting during the month of al-Muharram. of course, fasting is voluntary. the arabs used to go fasting on the day of ashura before islam. When prophet mohammad arrived at al-Madina, he found the jews fasting on the tenth day of the month of al-Muharram. when he asked about the reason for that, they told him they were celebrating the rescue of Mousa. prophet Mohammad said that we are closer to Mousa than the jews. So, he decided to go fasting the following year.
