The Rituals of Pilgrimage: A British Muslim's Step-by-Step Hajj and ʿUmrah Guide (UK Edition)
If you have made the niyyah for Hajj or ʿUmrah, this is your practical map. We walk through every ritual in order — niyyah, iḥrām, ṭawāf, saʿy, Minā, ʿArafah, Muzdalifah, ramī, naḥr, taḥallul, ṭawāf al-ifāḍah, the farewell ṭawāf — with the British Muslim's logistical questions answered: what to do at Heathrow, how to handle iḥrām on a long-haul flight, what to expect from Saudi tour operators in 2026, and how to avoid the most common mistakes UK pilgrims make.
Before you leave the UK
- Choose a registered tour operator: in the UK, look for ATOL protection and ensure the operator is registered with Saudi Arabia's Nusuk platform. Beware unregistered "cheap Hajj" offers — many British Muslim families have been scammed.
- Get the meningitis ACWY vaccine: Saudi entry requirement, available free at most UK GP surgeries.
- Memorise the talbiyah: Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna al-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulk, lā sharīka lak.
- Make tawbah: settle disputes, return what is owed, write a will, ask family forgiveness. Hajj is the deathbed practice, lived consciously.
- Read a sound guide: even one read of Mufti Taqi Usmani's "Easy Hajj" or al-Albānī's Manāsik al-Ḥajj in English translation puts you ahead of 90% of pilgrims.
1. Iḥrām
Two unstitched white sheets for men; modest dress for women. The niyyah is made before crossing the mīqāt — for British Muslims flying Heathrow→Jeddah, the mīqāt is Yalamlam, crossed during the flight. The pilot or your tour operator will announce. Many UK pilgrims wear iḥrām before boarding to avoid changing on the plane.
From this point: no perfume, no clipping nails or hair, no sexual relations, no hunting, no covering the head (men), no veiling the face (women, with caveats). Pronounce the talbiyah aloud frequently.
2. Arrival at the Ḥaram
For ʿUmrah and the Tamattuʿ form of Hajj (the most common for British Muslims), you go directly to the Masjid al-Ḥarām on arrival. Enter with the right foot, recite the entrance du'ā, and proceed to the Black Stone corner.
3. Ṭawāf al-ʿUmrah
Seven circuits anti-clockwise around the Kaʿbah. Begin at the Black Stone (face it, touch or salute it, say "Bismillāh, Allāhu akbar"). For the first three circuits, men do ramal — a brisk pace. Recite Qur'ān, du'ā, dhikr — there is no fixed text. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, recite Rabbanā ātinā fī d-dunyā ḥasanah… (al-Baqarah 2:201).
After ṭawāf: pray two rakʿah behind Maqām Ibrāhīm if possible (any space in the Ḥaram if not), then drink Zamzam water.
4. Saʿy
Seven trips between Ṣafā and Marwā, beginning at Ṣafā. Recite the verses of "Inna al-Ṣafā wa al-Marwā…" (al-Baqarah 2:158) before starting. Men jog between the green markers; women walk normally throughout. End at Marwā after the seventh trip.
5. Halq or Taqṣīr
Men: shave the head (preferred) or shorten all hair. Women: cut a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair. This completes the ʿUmrah. You exit iḥrām and resume normal clothing.
6. Yawm al-Tarwiyah (8 Dhul Ḥijjah)
Re-enter iḥrām for Hajj. Travel to Minā with your group. Pray the five daily prayers in Minā (shortened, not combined). Spend the night in the tent city.
7. Yawm ʿArafah (9 Dhul Ḥijjah)
The most important day of Hajj. After Fajr in Minā, travel to ʿArafah. Listen to the khutbah at Masjid al-Namira. Combine Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr (Ẓuhr time, shortened). Then stand in du'ā until sunset. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is ʿArafah." If you miss ʿArafah, you have missed Hajj.
This is the single greatest du'ā opportunity of your life. Prepare a list. Ask for everything — yourself, family, ummah, your community, the people of Gaza, your debts, your diseases, your children's future, the British Muslim community.
8. Muzdalifah (night of 9-10)
After sunset at ʿArafah, travel to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and ʿIshā combined. Sleep under the open sky. Collect 49 small pebbles for the stoning.
9. Yawm al-Naḥr (10 Dhul Ḥijjah)
Four rituals in order:
- Ramī al-Jamarah al-Kubrā: throw seven pebbles at the largest pillar.
- Naḥr: sacrifice an animal (in 2026, almost all UK pilgrims pay a voucher; the meat is processed in Mina).
- Halq/Taqṣīr: shave or shorten.
- Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah: return to the Ḥaram for the seven circuits and saʿy (if Tamattuʿ — saʿy is repeated; for Qirān/Ifrād it depends on whether saʿy was already done).
After taḥallul (release from iḥrām restrictions), most are now free except for the relations restriction, which lifts after ṭawāf al-ifāḍah.
10. Days of Tashrīq (11, 12, 13 Dhul Ḥijjah)
Stay in Minā. Each day, after Ẓuhr, throw seven pebbles at each of the three pillars (small, middle, large) — 21 pebbles per day. You may leave after the 12th if you depart Minā before sunset.
11. Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ (Farewell Ṭawāf)
Before flying back to Heathrow or Manchester, perform the farewell ṭawāf — seven circuits, no saʿy. Make du'ā that this not be your last visit.
UK pilgrims' top 7 mistakes
- Booking unregistered tour operators — many lose deposits.
- Not preparing physically — Hajj involves miles of walking. Train on a treadmill for three months.
- Bringing too much luggage — one cabin bag and one small case is enough.
- Pushing for the Black Stone aggressively — this is forbidden; salute from a distance if it is crowded.
- Praying salah while walking ṭawāf — invalid; complete ṭawāf first.
- Skipping the Adhkār of ʿArafah for selfies — this is the worst possible day to film for Instagram.
- Forgetting the farewell ṭawāf in the rush to the airport.
The deeper purpose
Every ritual has a meaning. The iḥrām is the shroud — your death rehearsal. The ṭawāf is the gathering at the Throne. ʿArafah is the standing on the Day of Judgement. The stoning is rejecting Iblīs — the same Iblīs who tried to discourage Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi al-salām from sacrificing Ismāʿīl. The sacrifice is your willingness to give up what you love for Allah.
You return from Hajj as a newborn (Bukhārī). The British Muslim who maintains that state through ongoing daily Qur'ān, salah, and ethical conduct keeps the pilgrimage alive in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham long after the suitcase is unpacked.
