"Every time Zakariyya entered upon her in the chamber, he found with her provision. He said, 'O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?' She said, 'It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.'" (Āl ʿImrān 3:37).

And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Yaʿqub. Zakariyya: The angelic announcement

They announced: "O Zakariyya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yaḥya. We have not assigned to any before him this name." (Maryam 19:7).

Zakariyya, astonished, asked: "My Lord, how can I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"

The reply: "Thus [it is]; your Lord says: 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.'"

The sign

Zakariyya asked for a sign to confirm what was happening. He was told that for three days he would not be able to speak to people except by gestures, even though his tongue and lips would still be capable of dhikr. The Qur'an says: "And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning" (Aal ʿImran 3:41).

Zakariyya's death
