  Istifaal and Isti’laa

Introduction: 

This blog is going to talk about some of the permanent characteristics of the arabic letters (sounds). This blog is going to talk about two contradicting aspects of the Arabic letters. We are going to talk about Ist’laa and Istifal. When a student of Tajweed learns about these opposite characteristics, the student will have a better idea about the Arabic alphabet.  Istifaal and Isti’laa is a very important Tajweed rule. Learning the letters (sounds) of Istifaal and Isti’laa helps you improve your Quran recitation.

Istifaal and Isti’laa

First, Isti’laa:

Isti’laa means elevation. First of all, by elevation we mean raising the back of the tongue in the oral cavity during pronouncing a certain letter (sound). Moreover and technically, Isti’laa means the elevation of the back of the tongue towards the roof of the mouth. This happens while pronouncing the (letter) sound. So, this category of letters constitute the arabic phrase:

( خ – ص – ض – غ – ط – ق – ظ )

Second. Istifaal:

In Tajweed, Istifaal literally means lowering down or dropping. Therefore, technically, Istifaal means keeping the tongue lowered or stretching flat. This takes place  in the oral cavity away from the roof of the mouth. This happens while pronouncing a letter (sound). all the letters, other than ( خص ضغط قظ). are letters of Istifaal.  Learning the letters (sounds) of Istifaal and Isti’laa is very important for every Tajweed student.

( أ – ب – ت – ج – ح – د – ذ – ر – ز -س  



( ع – ف – ك – ل – م – ن – ه – و – ي  -ش
