Sheikh Mohamed Refaat (born in Cairo on May 9, 1882 – May 9, 1950)

  In 1934, he was the one who inaugurated the broadcast of the Egyptian Radio.

Birth and upbringing

He took up reading in the Fadel Pasha Mosque in the Sayeda Zainab neighborhood in 1918 AD, where he was appointed as a reciter of the surah at the age of fifteen, and he achieved fame and won the love of people.

The broadcast of the Egyptian radio was opened in 1934 AD.

He continued to read in the mosque until his retirement as a matter of loyalty to the mosque, which witnessed his birth in the world of reading since childhood.

 And that was after the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Muhammad Al-Ahmadi Al-Zawahiri, asked about the permissibility of broadcasting the Noble Qur’an.

When the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC Arabic heard his voice, I sent to him and asked him to record the Qur’an, but he refused, thinking that it is forbidden because they are not Muslims


 It is narrated on the authority of the Sheikh that he was merciful, gentle, with strong feelings, sympathetic to the poor and the needy.

He would even check on his mare every day and recommend feeding him. He narrates that he visited a friend of his before his death, and his friend said to him, “Who will take care of my girl after my death?” The Sheikh was affected by this, and on the next day the Sheikh was reading the Quran from Surat Al-Duha and when he arrived at (As for the orphan, do not be conquered) he remembered the girl and wept bitterly, then allocated a sum of money to the girl until she got married.

 He was an ascetic, Sufi inclination, a Naqshbandi tariqa, who tended to poor simple people more than mixing with the rich. He revived an appropriate day for his poor neighbor, preferring her to go to commemorate the anniversary of the death of King Fouad, father of King Farouk.

 And he was crying and his tears wet his cheeks during his recitation until he collapsed once while he was in prayer when he was leading the worshipers reciting a verse that contained a situation of the torment of the Hereafter. He was a rabbinic, devoid of himself, conversing with God, invoking Him.

Sheikh Abul-Enein Shuaisha is considered one of the most affected by the recitation of Sheikh Muhammad Refaat, and his voice is very similar to him, so that the Egyptian radio used him to compensate for the interruptions in the recordings.

Sheikh Muhammad Rashad Al-Sharif, the reciter of Al-Aqsa Mosque, is also one of those influenced by the reading of Sheikh Muhammad Rifaat. In 1943, Sheikh Muhammad Rifaat listened to Muhammad Rashad al-Sharif, and he said about him, “I listen to Muhammad Rifaat from Palestine,” and he received a letter to him in 1944, considering him as “Muhammad Rifaat II.”

As for his recordings, almost all of his recordings were from the recording of one of his biggest fans, Zakaria Pasha Mahran, one of the notables of the Qusiya Center in Assiut and a member of the Egyptian Senate, who is credited with preserving the heritage of Sheikh Rifaat, which we hear now, and he loved Sheikh Rifaat without meeting him, and he was keen to record His concerts, which were broadcast by the Egyptian radio on the air, and for that he bought two gramophones from Germany, and when he learned of the Sheikh’s illness, he rushed to the radio carrying one of these records, and asked the radio officials to make a pension for Sheikh Rafaat for life, and indeed the radio allocated 10 pounds as a monthly pension for the Sheikh Rifaat, but the sheikh died before he could receive it.

The family of Zakaria Pasha donated the records to be published, and the heirs of Sheikh Muhammad Refaat obtained them after the death of Zakaria Pasha Mahran from his wife “Zainab Hanim Mubarak.” Without these recordings, he would have lost his legacy except from 3 recordings kept by the radio station, and these records did not have an impact on the life of the Sheikh only Rather, “Zakaria Pasha” the lover who recorded without personal knowledge or vision of “Refaat.” Zakaria Pasha’s wife said: Despite the activities of my husband Zakaria Pasha Noran in economics, law, politics and authorship, his name was only mentioned in conjunction with the fact that he recorded a group of The recordings of Sheikh Muhammad Rifaat. Mrs. Hana Hussein Muhammad Rifaat, the granddaughter of the sheikh, explained that the sons of Sheikh Rifaat have throughout their lives been devoted to repairing and treating these cylinders, and that her father gave the radio 30 hours of Sheikh Rifaat’s voice for free, and it is all the heritage that we currently hear of Sheikh Rifaat, stressing that The grandchildren continue the march and are trying to save another 30 hours, with the voice of Sheikh Rifaat, which has not yet seen the light, and has not reached the ears of his fans, saying: “We transferred all the discs to a hard disk, and we worked in such a studio to repair and purify them, but as far as our weak capabilities are, and we need high-tech studios, etc. Our capabilities are more than we can handle, so we stopped.”

Nicknames to describe the Sheikh’s voice

The writer Muhammad Al-Sayyid Al-Muwailihi said about him in Al-Resala magazine: “Theders of this time is a musician by nature and nature.

 The writer Mahmoud Al-Saadani was asked about the secret of the uniqueness of Sheikh Muhammad Rifaat, and he said: He was full of belief and belief in what he read. As for Ali Khalil, “Sheikh of Broadcasters,” he says of him: “He was calm, and you felt while you were sitting with him that the man was enjoying his life as if he was in the paradise of the eternity. He was an angelic entity. You see in his face purity, purity, tranquility and pure faith in the Creator, as if he is not from the people of the earth

 The former Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Mustafa Al-Maraghi, said: “It is a gift from predestination when you are compromising and generous, and even honoring humanity

  Radio broadcaster Muhammad Fathi, who was nicknamed the radio station, said: “Listen to Sheikh Muhammad Refaat reciting Surat Yusuf, because our art of recitation has reached the summit, rather the highest peaks of originality and accuracy, especially from Sheikh Muhammad Refaat. illness and death

In 1943 AD, Sheikh Muhammad Rifaat’s throat hit a hiccup or hiccup that interrupted his recitation, so he stopped reading. Hiccup was caused by a tumor in his throat, believed to be throat cancer. He spent on him what he owned until he became poor, but he did not reach out to anyone. He even apologized for accepting the sum collected in subscription (up to fifty thousand pounds) for his treatment, even though he did not have the costs of treatment, His answer was his famous word, “The reader of the Qur’an will not be offended.”

 The Sheikh passed away on May 9, 1950 A.D. His dream was to be buried next to the Sayyida Nafisa Mosque until it was decided to give him a plot of land next to the mosque, so he built his burial place on it, and it was his habit to go every Monday in front of the cemetery to read whatever verses of the Holy Quran were available.
