The Morning and Evening Adhkār: A British Muslim Family's Daily Guide (UK)

The daily protective recitations every British Muslim should know

The morning and evening adhkār — the established Sunnah recitations performed after Fajr and after ʿAṣr (or Maghrib) — are one of the most spiritually substantial daily practices in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ taught specific du\'ās, Quranic verses and prayer formulas to be recited at these times, with specific protective benefits attached to each. For British Muslim families, the morning and evening adhkār are the daily anchor of remembrance, protection, and prophetic discipline.

What the adhkār are

The morning adhkār are recited between Fajr and sunrise (or up to before Dhuhr if missed). The evening adhkār are recited between ʿAṣr and Maghrib (or up to before ʿIshāʾ if missed). They consist of established Sunnah recitations including:

  • Āyat al-Kursī (Quran 2:255) — once
  • Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ + Surah Al-Falaq + Surah An-Nās — three times each
  • The "bismillāhi alladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa ismihi shayʾun fī al-arḍi wa lā fī al-samāʾi wa huwa al-samīʿu al-ʿalīm" formula — three times
  • The "aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhi al-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq" formula — three times
  • The morning du\'ā "aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥa al-mulku li-llāh" / evening "amsaynā wa amsā al-mulku li-llāh"
  • "Lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr" — 100 times during the day (in some narrations specifically morning)
  • The closing two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night
  • Many other established recitations

The standard collections

Most British Muslim families use one of three standard collections:

  • Hisn al-Muslim ("Fortress of the Muslim") by Saʿīd al-Qaḥṭānī — the most widely circulated du\'ā collection in the Sunni world. Available in print and as free apps in English translation.
  • al-Adhkār by Imam al-Nawawī (13th century) — the classical scholarly collection.
  • The Eaalim morning and evening adhkār guide — a structured introduction for British Muslim adults beginning the practice.

The protective benefits

Āyat al-Kursī

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī after every obligatory prayer — nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death" (al-Nasāʾī). Recited in the morning adhkār as part of broader protection.

The Mu\'awwidhatayn (Al-Falaq + An-Nās) + Al-Ikhlāṣ

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites these three surahs three times in the morning and three times in the evening — they will suffice him against all things" (Abū Dāwūd 5082).

The "bismillāhi alladhī lā yaḍurru" formula

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says \'In the name of Allah with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing\' three times — nothing will harm him" (Tirmidhi 3388).

The "perfect words of Allah" formula

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says in the evening \'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created\' three times — no scorpion or other harmful creature will harm him that night" (Tirmidhi 3437).

How long the morning and evening adhkār take

A standard morning routine takes approximately 10-15 minutes when read at a reasonable pace. The evening routine is similar. For British Muslim families:

  • Morning: incorporate the adhkār into the time after Fajr, before breakfast or work commute
  • Evening: incorporate after ʿAṣr or after Maghrib — many UK Muslim families do them just before Maghrib in winter (when the time gap is shortest) or after Maghrib in summer

Practical pathway for British Muslim families

Beginner level (week 1-4)

Start with just three things: Āyat al-Kursī once, Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ + Al-Falaq + An-Nās three times each, the bismillāhi alladhī formula three times. Approximately 5 minutes. Build the habit before adding more.

Intermediate level (months 2-3)

Add the morning du\'ā "aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥa al-mulku li-llāh" / evening equivalent. Add the perfect-words formula. Add 100 times "lā ilāha illā Allāh..." across the day. Approximately 8-10 minutes total.

Full Sunnah level (months 4+)

Add the closing verses of Al-Baqarah at night. Add the various other established du\'ās from Hisn al-Muslim. Approximately 15-20 minutes per session. The full prophetic Sunnah maintained.

Teaching children

British Muslim children should learn the morning and evening adhkār by primary school age. Suggested approach:

  • Ages 3-5: have them recite the three surahs (Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, An-Nās) at bedtime as their introduction
  • Ages 6-8: add Āyat al-Kursī after their Maghrib prayer
  • Ages 9-12: full morning and evening adhkār routine; help them build the habit before they go to secondary school
  • Ages 13+: their own personal practice, supported by parental modelling
