What is Surah An-Nas?

Surah An-Nas (سُورَةُ النَّاس, "Mankind") is the 114th and final surah of the Qur'an. It contains six verses and takes its name from the word an-nas — "mankind" or "the people" — which appears repeatedly throughout it. Together with the surah before it, Surah Al-Falaq, it forms the pair known as the Mu'awwidhatayn — "the Two Surahs of Refuge."

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions to recite these two surahs regularly for protection: in the morning and evening, before sleeping, and after the obligatory prayers. Surah An-Nas specifically seeks Allah's protection from the most subtle of all enemies — the whisperer who plants doubt and temptation in the human heart. The full text and translation

"Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer — who whispers in the breasts of mankind — from among the jinn and mankind.'"
(Surah An-Nas 114:1–6)

On its surface the surah is a short prayer. Read word by word, it becomes something richer: a carefully structured plea that names Allah by three ascending attributes, then names the exact threat it seeks refuge from and its two possible sources. Let us break it down.

Understanding the meaning behind the words

Once the individual words are clear, the design of the surah becomes striking — it divides neatly into two halves.

First half — who you turn to

Three rising names of Allah, each linked to mankind: Rabb (the Lord who nurtures) → Malik (the King who rules) → Ilah (the God who alone is worshipped). Before naming any threat, the surah reminds you that your protector is your Nurturer, your King, and your God — completely sufficient.

Second half — what you seek refuge from

The al-waswas (persistent whisperer) who is also al-khannas (the one who retreats the moment you remember Allah). It works in the chest — the heart — and can come from two sources: the jinn and mankind. Yes — people, too, can whisper doubt and despair into one another's hearts.

Understood this way, Surah An-Nas is a complete map of a spiritual reality: the believer, exposed to a subtle inner enemy, takes refuge in the One whose care, authority and divinity make Him the only true protection. The benefits of Surah An-Nas

Surah An-Nas carries a special status in the daily life of a practising Muslim. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described the two surahs of refuge as among the best forms of protection ever revealed. Its most established uses include:

  • Morning and evening remembrance — recited three times each morning and evening as part of the daily adhkar.

  • Before sleeping — the Prophet ﷺ would recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blow into his cupped hands, and wipe them over his body.

  • After the obligatory prayers — recited following each fard salah.

  • For seeking healing and protection — used when feeling unwell or seeking refuge from harm.

For Muslim families in the UK and US navigating busy, distraction-filled lives, this surah is a compact but powerful daily habit — and reciting it with understanding transforms it from routine into a conscious act of turning to Allah. A Muslim always lives in the company of Allah. This happens when Muslims accompany the book of Allah. Join E-aalim and learn the holy Quran.

How to learn Surah An-Nas word for word

Here is a simple approach that works well for busy learners:

  1. Start with what you already know. You can likely already recite the surah — so you are not learning to read it, you are learning to understand it. A huge advantage.

  2. Take a few words a day. Don't absorb all twenty at once; small, steady effort compounds, and within a week the whole surah is meaningful.

  3. Connect the word to its sound. Hear each word recited correctly and link the Arabic to its meaning. Tajweed and meaning reinforce each other.

  4. Notice the repeated words. An-nas appears five times — spotting repetitions makes the surah easier to hold and reveals its structure.

  5. Study with a qualified teacher. A teacher corrects your pronunciation, explains the grammar, and answers the questions that naturally arise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Surah An-Nas opens with "Qul a'udhu bi-rabbi an-nas" — "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" — and continues by naming Allah as the King (Malik) and God (Ilah) of mankind, then seeks refuge from the evil of the retreating whisperer (al-waswas al-khannas) who whispers in the chests of people, whether from the jinn or from mankind.

The word an-nas appears five times. It is attached to the three attributes of Allah (Lord, King and God of mankind), it describes where the whisperer operates (the chests of mankind), and it identifies one of the two sources of whispering (mankind itself). The repetition emphasises that the whole surah is about the human being and the protection available to them.

Both are surahs of refuge (the Mu'awwidhatayn). Al-Falaq describes one attribute of Allah and seeks refuge from several external evils such as darkness, sorcery and envy. An-Nas describes three attributes of Allah and seeks refuge from a single internal evil — the whisperer in the heart. Al-Falaq addresses outward threats; An-Nas addresses the inner threat of whispering.
