Concept of Ruqyah in Islam

“Recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, for these two will suffice you from everything.”

The Prophet also urged muslims to recite Ayat Al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286), he identified both of them as potent verses for protection and healing.
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ…
(سورة البقرة 2:255)

Practical Steps for Performing Ruqyah:
A Muslim can perform Ruqyah by oneself or by someone else for the afflicted person. Here are some steps to follow:
- Sincerity and Tawakkul: Before starting, it is crucial to purify one’s intention and place trust in Allah Alone.
- Purification: Both the one performing Ruqyah and the patient should ideally be in a state of physical and spiritual cleanliness, such as having wudu (ablution).

“بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ حَاسِدَةٍ، اللهُ يَشْفِيكَ، بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ.”
“In the Name of Allah, I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul, or envious eye. May Allah cure you, in the Name of Allah, I perform Ruqyah for you.”

- Blowing and Wiping: After reciting, Islam recommended a Muslim to lightly blow into the hands and wipe over the body or the affected area. This is a Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).
Common Misconceptions about Ruqyah:
- Ruqyah is not a magical spell: It is crucial to distinguish between Islamic Ruqyah and superstitious practices. Authentic Ruqyah stands solely on Quranic verses and hadiths, without any form of shirk.
